BLOG: Executive Vice President of the European Commission visited our Enschede living lab

On Friday, May 12 Frans Timmermans Vice President of the European Commission visited the SmoothEMS with Gridshield Living lab on the campus of University Twente in Enschede. He showed great interest in smart charging technology and research.

Timmermans, known for his leadership in advancing the European Green Deal and its goal of achieving climate neutrality by 2050, gained firsthand experience to the latest developments in sustainable energy solutions. During his visit to the Living Lab, Timmermans received an informative overview of the ongoing research and observed promising results. A key highlight was a demonstration of the smart charging application developed by the University of Twente, which optimizes energy usage by efficiently utilizing generated power.

Additionally, a demonstration was conducted on a newly installed interactive display at one of the charging stations, showcasing how input from electric vehicle (EV) drivers can enhance electricity distribution and reduce strain on the grid.

The visit concluded with an engaging discussion between Timmermans and the researchers, focusing on the further development of their work and potential improvements within the European Commission to enhance smart charging initiatives.

Timmermans’ visit to the Living Lab emphasized the importance of collaborative research and highlighted the University of Twente’s commitment to advancing smart charging technology in partnership with AmperaPark, ElaadNL and onther partners. The visit also underscored the significance of sustainable energy solutions in achieving the European Union’s climate objectives.
