Batteries play an important role in providing sufficient power for zero-emission construction projects at locations where grid capacity is limited or no grid connection is available. However, reliable communication between energy management systems and battery energy storage systems is crucial to their effective deployment. In a white paper, we outline the current state of play, the key challenges and a pathway towards a widely applicable standard.
Zero-emission construction is becoming increasingly common in the Netherlands, helping to reduce nitrogen emissions, mitigate climate change and improve air quality. This involves extensive use of electric construction equipment, all of which requires a sufficient power supply, even at construction sites with no grid connection or only limited grid capacity for charging electric vehicles and machinery.
Battery energy storage systems (BESS) play a key role in meeting this need. ElaadNL is investigating how standardised communication can improve the interoperability, safety and scalability of BESS applications on construction sites. Reliable communication between energy management systems (EMS) and BESS is essential for their effective use at zero-emission construction sites. We have published a white paper on this topic.
The white paper outlines the current situation and the key challenges. Progress is being made: integrating a BESS into an EMS used to take several weeks, but can now be completed within a few days. However, replacing or adding a system still requires a bespoke solution each time because no standard exists. This results in higher costs and delays for end users.
The white paper also presents conclusions and recommendations. Its main conclusion is that the energy transition on construction sites requires flexible, scalable solutions for zero-emission construction. Without standardised communication between EMS and BESS, the market will remain fragmented, resulting in higher costs and limited reliability. A pragmatic middleware solution could already enable interoperability while also helping to shape European standardisation.
The white paper calls for the development and adoption of a communication interface based on existing standards, its integration into field trials and demonstrations, the inclusion of standardisation requirements in procurement procedures, the development of European guidelines, and continued investment in knowledge sharing.
This white paper once again highlights both the importance and the benefits of standardisation. Together, they will enable the zero-emission construction market to truly scale up.
