Invitation: Developing a formal V2G-ready Label

ElaadNL formally invites industry partners, grid operators, certification bodies, and other stakeholders to participate in the joint development of a V2G-ready label. The objective of the proposal is to create clear and consistent rules regarding the usage of terms like V2G-ready and V2G-interoperable, in order to create clarity for the end user.

In recent years, the first V2G (vehicle-to-grid) products have been deployed on the European market. In countries such as France, Germany, and the Netherlands, V2G is now implemented beyond pilot environments and into practical, real-world use cases. This has led to growing consumer interest in V2G solutions and an increasing number of ‘V2G-ready’ claims by both EV and charging station manufacturers, stating that their devices support or are prepared for V2G.

Definition

Currently, there is no clear definition specifying when a product qualifies for and may be marketed as V2G-ready. To avoid consumer confusion, a clear, sector-wide definition is urgently needed.  Furthermore, early V2G adoptions rely on proprietary solutions only, and are not yet multivendor interoperable, restricting functionality to specific combinations of EVs and charging stations. New regulations, such as the revision of the Network Code on Requirements for Generators, together with communication protocols like ISO 15118-20, are essential components to prevent vendor lock‑in. The definition of V2G‑ready should therefore also include multivendor V2G‑interoperability to ensure that products are both future‑proof and capable of operating across different systems.
