European Commission visits ElaadNL for publication “Interoperability for HEMS and smart devices”

On 1 June 2026, a delegation of more than 40 representatives from the European Commission and the joint expert group of D4E-STF-CoW visited the ElaadNL Test Lab in Arnhem for an extensive field excursion.

During the visit to ElaadNL, the delegation gained insight into the current state of play within ElaadNL’s field of work through a series of presentations. The focus was on topics such as household energy flexibility, cybersecurity, testing vehicles for smart and bidirectional charging, and strategic explorations for scaling up. Representatives from the Dutch Ministries of Economic Affairs and Climate Policy and of Infrastructure and Water Management were present to explain the national programmes to the European representatives.

This was followed by a tour of no fewer than eleven demonstration stands. In smaller groups, participants were introduced to various market-ready technologies and innovations, with experts enthusiastically explaining their possibilities. Concrete commercial smart devices were shown that support EEBus, Matter, S2, OCPP and/or OpenADR. The V2G service from Renault and We Drive Solar was also present.

The combination of presentations and demonstrations provided a clear and coherent picture of how the Netherlands is working on the integration of smart devices and electric transport into a future-proof, safe and robust electricity system.

A special moment during the afternoon session was the presentation of the first copy of the publication “Interoperability for HEMS and smart devices”. Mark van Stiphout, Deputy Head of Unit Energy C2 at DG ENERGY, received the document from Frank Geerts, Manager Smart/Bidirectional Charging & Residential Flexibility at ElaadNL.

Mark van Stiphout: “The energy transition requires the energy system to become much smarter and more interactive, while making it much easier to make use of all that intelligence. This is a European challenge to which ElaadNL, with this publication, makes an important and hopefully inspiring contribution.”

The publication explains in clear language why ElaadNL is working to standardise communication between Home Energy Management Systems and connected large smart devices, such as heat pumps, charging stations, batteries and solar inverters. This standardisation is essential to support the energy transition and to make optimal use of flexibility in households.
