Ongoing project

Core aspects

A key barrier to unlocking residential flexibility is the limited technical interoperability of devices. As a result, acquiring a HEMS is challenging and costly, and devices from different manufacturers do not work well together.  In the report ‘Residential Flexibility’  manufacturers have indicated their willingness to contribute to the necessary development towards greater interoperability and actionable options for all consumers. To advance technical interoperability the following recommendations were given, which are all included in the project :

  1. Start with core flexibility functionality and a limited number of use cases
  2. Make a reference architecture for residential flexibility
  3. Start with limited number of technical protocols. Begin with a limited set of messages from a small number of flexibility protocols (within and to the home), allowing for rapid early progress.
  4. Jointly develop and execute test scenarios.
  5. Accelerate implementation of protocols via open-source development.
  6. ElaadNL to coordinate a project to improve technical interoperability in the Netherlands and Europe

ElaadNL has set the goal that by the end of 2026, an attractive commercial offering of interoperable devices will be available on the market. Improved interoperability should increase the use of residential flexibility for both market and grid management purposes. This concerns interoperability both in communication to the home and within the home.
